Description
A Ceratosaurus charges after a Stegosaurus mother and her hatchling, scaring away the pterosaurs perched on her back. A few Apatosaurus graze in the background.
Stegosaurus ("roofed lizard") is probably one of the best-known dinosaurs, and easily recognized by the double row of rhomboidal plates running down its spine and the four bony spikes at the end of its tail. While the purpose of the plates is still uncertain, it seems to be pretty clear that the spikes (known collectively as a thagomizer, a term originated in a comic strip) were there for self-defense. Stegosaurus was also quite a massive animal, the largest stegosaurid of them all, measuring up to 9 metres long.
Ceratosaurus ("horned lizard") is also a quite recognizable animal, standing out for its nasal horn (and also the horns above the eyes), body armor, and small, four-fingered forelimbs. It was a medium carnivore, large enough to pose a threat to most of its contemporary herbivores, but still small enough to be attacked by the larger Allosaurus, Torvosaurus and Saurophaganax. It measured around 6 metres long.
Believe it or not, I was thinking of my sister when drawing this. She always seemed to be very fond of Stegosaurus. I was also inspired to draw it after watching these: [link] [link]
