Description

A Darwinopterus goes after a smaller ramphorynchoid pterosaur, while another in the background has caught a small gliding mammal, a Volaticotherium. All this is being witnessed by an infant Mamenchisaurus.
Darwinopterus ("Darwin's wing/Darwin's winged one") is a type of pterosaur that has proven very interesting for scientists, as it exhibes features both of ramphorynchoid pterosaurs (long tail, elongated feet, kite-shaped wing structure) and of pterodactyloids (large, heavy head), which has led to its hailing as the missing link between both kinds of pterosaurs, as ramphorynchoids are generally believed to be more primitive, and were ultimately replaced by pterodactyloids.
Its skull and teeth structure also suggest that it was a carnivore, thus, the animal would have filled the ecological niche of hawks, eagles and false vampire bats by preying on smaller vertebrates. Coincidentally, I myself always believed that there should have been predatorial pterosaurs that fed on large prey, such as mammals, lizards and other pterosaurs. So, yay for Darwinopterus, and yay for me!

While there were predatory pterosaurs, Darwinopterus wasn't one.

It was too small
